DNS Made Easy
What is DNS Servers?
The Domain Name System (abbreviated DNS) is an Internet directory service. DNS is how domain names are translated into IP addresses, and DNS also controls email delivery. If your computer cannot access DNS, your web browser will not be able to find web sites, and you will not be able to receive or send email.
If your considering hosting your own Mail server such as Exchange or would just like to have remote access to your home system. Then you will need to have direct real time access to your DNS server.
Not to be confused with a Domain Name. This you must also have but with dns it takes the domain name the next step. It directs where (or to what server) your domain name points to.
Example:
Lets say you have GageDigital as your website hosting company. You also have a domain name registered with a company like GoDaddy. When you set your web hosting service up with my company I would give you DNS information to give to GoDaddy's servers. This makes it passable when you type in your domain name it points to my web hosting service and all works good.
But let's say you have an Exchange server at your company and you would like to allow remote access to your email. You would most likely want an easy way to access it, so you could simply type in http://webmail.yourcompany.com to get your webmail. Basically DNS would point webmail.yourcompany.com to your company mail server.
Now let's say when your at home you would like to host your own computer games online so others can gain remote access to your computer as a server. But your home IP address does not stay the same. This is not a problem because dynamic DNS is fully supported. A small application can be installed on your computer that will update DNS service and make it so http://gamer.yourcompany.com always points to your home computer even if your IP address changes several times during the day.
All this works while http://www.yourcompany.com still point's to your companies website.
